Summary: | Volume 1 (published in 2022) provides a history of 19th-century photography as told through 100 works held bby the Snite Museum at the University of Notre Dame. Author and curator, David Acton, tracks the history, artistic concepts, and technical advances of photography through examination of the pioneering work of William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877), Alphonse Louis Poitevin (1819-1892), Frédéric Flachéron (1813-1883), Roger Fenton (1819-1869), Désiré Charnay (1828-1915), Felice Beato (1832-1909), Mathew B. Brady (1822-1896), Julia Margaret Cameron, (1815-1879), William Bell (1830-1910), Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913), and Jacob Riis (1849-1914). This volume provides a pictorial history, with specialty areas including Mathew Brady's famous photographs of the Civil War and the exploration of the American West by photographers including Eadweard Muybridge and Charles Savage. Acton provides historical context, brief biographies, and a glossary of photographic terms. Volume 2 (published in 2019) focuses on 20th century photography but includes works from the earliest days of photography by William Henry Fox Talbot and French daguerreotypists in the 1800s. Then it moves on to photographs by more contemporary artists such as Edward Steichen, one of the most important figures in American creative photography in the early 1900s, and Alfred Stieglitz, Eugene Atget, Edward Weston and August Sander, from the early years of the century. The mid-century is represented by famous names including Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Capa, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Ansel Adams, Alexander Rodchenko, Berenice Abbot , Hiroshi Sugimoto and Andy Warhol. The collection continues to expand into the present day with works by Larry Clark, Sally Mann, Richard Misrach, and Abelardo Morell. |
